About Us

Denmel Dobermans is a registered kennel name with the Canadian Kennel Club, and we are located in Calgary, AB Canada.  My name is Denise Mellor, and I have been involved in breeding Doberman Pinschers since since the year 2000.  I purchased my first Doberman, a black/rust male puppy named Apache, in 1980.  His breeder left the country and I never received his proper pedigree and registration, however, he was the dog that made me fall in love with this breed.  I owned several other dobermans (and a dalmation) prior to becoming involved in breeding and showing.  I am a member of the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club),  DPCC (Doberman Pinscher Club of Canada), ADPC (Alberta Doberman Pinscher Club), and CADF (Calgary Associated Dog Fanciers).  I have served in the past on the ADPC Board as  Secretary and also as Treasurer, as well as working on several Specialty committees. Presently I am involved with the DPCC as a member of the Howler (newsletter to members) committee.

My first red girl Xena (Ch Royolyn Sports Page) became my foundation bitch.  She is the mother, grandmother and great grandmother of some of  my dogs.  We lost Xena to mammary cancer in March 2008, but she will always be in our hearts.  You can see more of Xena on her tribute page.

Our breeding program is focused on health.  Unfortunately our breed is plagued by a few major health issues including DCM (Dilated Cardio Myopathy) and several others of major concern.  Although there is no definitive test at this time for DCM, we believe that as a breeder it is important to do a thorough investigation of pedigrees and give all health issues as much importance as conformation and temperament.  We breed for the dogs we wish to carry forward with, however many puppies in the litters are sold as pets.

We train in agility and rally obedience, and are working towards finally competing.  We encourage all owners to train and do dog sports, even if not on a competitive level.  You can see a few of my favourite training facilities on my links page.  Dobermans love to be part of our lives, and nothing makes them happier than working and playing with their owners.
