March 14/2010 Smartie turned 1 year old. Happy Birthday Smartie.
Apr 2-5,2010, Easter Weekend at Renaissance show for the BCDPC Specialty. Smartie took Breed 1 of the 4 days, and judging was kind of all over the map at the all breed with no day the same. In the Sweepstakes for the BCDPC under Breeder Dawn Danner (Sunset) Smartie was Best Junior, and Best Overall Sweepstakes Winner. At the BCDPC Specialty under Breeder Mary White (Freespirit) Smartie earned the only Award of Merit. She was handled by Heidi Gervais.
Apr 17, 2010. Due to personal commitments, did not attend the all breed show in Edmonton, but managed to make it to the ADPC Specialty with Smartie. Trina Neil showed her again, and she was the 2nd Award of Merit under Mary Rodgers (Marienburg). Way to go Smartie!
April 30, 2010 Hayley turned 9 years of age!!! If you read of Hayley's health issues on her page, you will understand how ecstatic we are about her being 9. Onward and hopefully she will be with us next April at 10!
May 14, 2010 Bama finally has started to put on a few pounds, and went to Medicine Hat Show with handler Peggy Mignon. He was BOW for his first 2 Canadian points!! Did not win the other 2 show days, but he is just starting to mature, and getting to know Peggy. (Getting him to eat away from home was probably the biggest accomplishment of the weekend :)
May 22/23 I travelled with Smartie across the border for her first US show at Mt Baker WA. Danica Eiswerth handled her to BOW Sat for her first US point. Sun she was RWB. We are off to a good start on her Am Ch.
July 3, 2010 we made it to Portage La Prairie, MB after some car trouble in SK delaying our arrival. At the DPCC National Sweeps under Michelle Czebotarenku Smartie was Best in Sweeps. Then at the DPCC National Specialty Show under Pamela Dehetre she won another Award of Merit. Then that same day in the All Breed show under Pat Taylor, Smartie won Best of Breed and her first Working Group 1st !! All this with me, Denise Mellor, on the end of the leash! What a day.
Below are 2009 notes from top to bottom.
Feb and early Mar did Holters on Hayley, Mira and Seven again. All are normal, Yeah!
I dragged my Mira to the Chilliwack Specialty and shows Easter wknd 2009, for the WAE (Working Aptitude Evaluation - DPCA) testing since there usually are none in our area. It was a long 12 hours each way with winter mountain roads on the way back, but she passed...yeah! She is now Ch. Denmel's Critical Acclaim, WAC.
I organized a Booth at Pet Expo for the ADPC, and we had 2 dogs per 2 hour shift on the Sat and Sun in April 09. It was great, and 15,000 people passed by and since we were in a great location near the entrance, we hope that is how many people were either introduced to dobes, or had a chance to visit with them. I was especially proud of my boys Trucker and Whisky! They loved everyone.
April 30, 2009: Hayley (Ch Supernova Powerplay v Denmel) turned 8 years old! The reason this is such a landmark is that Hayley was diagnosed (because we test) with CAH before her 3rd birthday. Her liver enzymes were so high, we did not think we would have her a year. We changed her diet and treated her with several natural supplements and vitamins. And here she is 8!! We got her a gourmet doggy birthday cake which was basically a huge holistic dog cookie with yogurt for the decorations. Well, what food-loving dog would not love that? Hopefully we can celebrate more birthdays with our Hayley.
Mira was spayed on May 8/09 and seemed fine. Then bleeding from the wound started, and got worse over the next day or so. Tension bandages did not help, IV fluids and clotting medication and more tension bandages and finally after an overnight at the vet's, she was ok again. I researched the anti-inflammatory she was given, which the vet had used without incident on many other dogs of other breeds. However, there have been deaths and problems reported and in particular with Dobermans. Please do not let your vet give your doberman Deramaxx! We are lucky the bleeding was external so we knew and could resolve the problem. Some have not been as lucky. We are thankful to still have our Mira.
May long weekend (May 16th) I travelled to Texas and brought back my new baby girl! Welcome to "Smartie" (Sunburg's Smart Surprise) who was whelped Mar.14/09, whom Joanne Davis and Jana Dupre have entrusted us with. She is out of Trotyl (Am Ch Trotyl de Black Shadow) x Hannah (Am Ch Olympia Canberra v Promise). Another redhead girl at my house!
The weekend of NACA in Edmonton, in Conjunction with the ADPC Specialty, Pita was handled by her owner/breeder to WB Sunday under Judge Dr Michael Woods for 2 points. Then she was then handled by Peggy Mignon to WB on Monday under Judge Judy Harrington for another 2 points and NEW CH!! So now she is Ch Denmel's Are We There Yet.
Pita was pushing for ALL my attention, and it was not fair to my old girl Hayley. So I made the tough decision to place her in someone else's home. She went to live in the Okanagan on an acreage and her new owners and new dog buddy there all love her. They re-named her "Bella" though.
Lloydminster show Smartie went for "practice". She came home with her first 3 points, and 1 show she was awarded Best of Breed. And she's offf.....
We went to Fort Mitchell, KY USA for the DPCA Nationals. Smartie placed 1st in her class in the Futurity, and 4th in her class in the National. At this level of competition we were thrilled. Her littermates that attended also did well, and many noticed them and commented on this beautiful litter. She was handled by Jr Handler from Surrey, BC, Danica Eiswerth. Danica also competed in Jr Handling with her dog Rita and won Best Jr in the DPCA Specialty! Congratulations Danica.
We travelled to Abbotsford BC for the LMDF show at the Tradex in Oct, and Smartie was WB/BOW over Am Ch's and some tough competition! WB on Saturday also. Best Puppy in Breed all 3 days over puppy specials! Now on 8 points
Bama arrived at Denmel! He is 15 months old and is D'Rays Bama Breeze v Promise. We will show him here and grow him up a little more in hopes of him contributing to our breeding program later. He is out of Jana Dupre's old Jet (Am Ch Olympia Stealth Mirage) who we tried a frozen breeding from and did not get puppies. We are excited to have Bama.
Nov 28-30, 2009 our new girl Smartie finished her Canadian Championship and is now: Ch Sunburg's Smart Surprise. She starts agility classes this week, and will be shown as a puppy special in Canada and later in the US.
